Rose stems are a complex set of micro "straws"
that draw water from the bottom of the vase to the flower head. Air
can get trapped on the cut stem then travel up the stem about 1/4
inch then stop. When this happens, it blocks the process of drawing
water and the lack of water to the bloom causes it to droop. It can
be revived by giving it a fresh cut about an inch above the bottom
and placed immediately back in the vase. Scissors should never be
used to cut flower stems as they are made to cut paper and not
flowers. Garden shears however, would give a more positive result.
Cutting stems under water provides the least opportunity for an air
bubble to form. If you can not get the rose to revive after several
attempts, you should contact your florist for replacement. |
